Movie Review - Banana Island Ghost

Sundays are for movies...

Truth be told, there was nothing fascinating about this movie from the trailer. It had just seemed like one of those fickle comedies.

No doubt, Nollywood is upping the ante in movies but when juxtaposed with foreign movies in stories and delivery, ehh...we are still behind.

So, my sister calls me up and enthuses about how I would love Banana Island Ghost and I scrounged my face even though she couldn't see me and asked, "Why do you think I'd love it?"

She goes, "Oh, it's funny. It has everything you like, you know, plus size girl and all!"

I was sold at 'plus size girl'. As a writer of plus size fiction -(https://Okadabooks.com/user/Ememjamesbassey), I appreciate bold ladies being given lead roles. So, I promised I'd see the movie.

A few days later, I read a review of the movie on twitter and the tweet had absolutely nothing good to say about it. Tweeting a reply, I reserved judgement until I saw the movie.

I have just seen the movie...

And I have mixed feelings. I laughed, it was humorous. I caught feelings because it had some deep scenes. The acting wasn't 'wow' but it could pass for average and the story...

Well,  the story had lots of holes in it. Maybe, I noticed the holes because I saw the movie with a writer's eye, but there were character inconsistencies everywhere.

The movie is a mix of so many genres. Was it supposed to be a Romcom (romantic comedy)? It should've been since 'soul-mate' had been mentioned and it was the sole -pun intended- reason the 'Ghost' existed at 'Banana Island'. But then nothing romantic happened.

Was it supposed to be an Action Comedy? It was, in that regard, I commend the makers of the movie, the graphics and fight scenes were awesome.

But the lead female had a lot of inconsistencies. It was a volatile mix of a lady determined to save her father's house who was dumb as a kid and couldn't graduate in time and then ended up in prison for pick-pocketing but works at a big multi-National company even though she also works as a flyer distributing mascot all in a bid to pay the bank 18million naira in 3days.

Quite exhausting and highly impossible in Nigeria.

At one point, she sang elegantly on stage, but previously, at her house, she sang like an illiterate market woman; that didn't prepare me at all for when she sang on stage. In fact, I feared she would go sing the local stuff from her room on stage.

I expected more from the movie. I expected more for the female lead, I didn't like the perception that she was dumb, though some scenes played her smart which - inconsistencies.

Overall, the movie had tiny bursts of awesome at intervals. All I'm saying is, Banana Island Ghost could've been better. It could've been an overall awesome movie instead of having epileptic brilliance in some scenes. I recommend this movie for action comedy lovers and less analytic persons.

Okay, lovelies, on to the next one! 😉

Pandemic Movie Review - Native Girl

It's been a minute, folks. Hope you're holding up okay in the lockdown. The pandemic has necessitated that we do any and all things and that includes all the channels on DStv,  even the terrible ones; cue - African Magic Epic...shoot me already! Anyway, this evening, the movie Native Girl came up and apart from the descriptive name, what caught my attention and held it was the director's name - Yul Edochie. (Ahem, a few of us fancy his gravelly voice). He's a great actor though, and this was the first time I was seeing him as director, I was really interested in the movie. Except, when the movie began, I got distracted by another person, the herione - Judy Austin. She was phenomenal as the native girl who could only speak Ibo language despite her absolute beauty. Brief description: Yul Edochie played Uchenna, a business man in the US whose mom wants grandkids and therefore introduces a woman to him on phone. Said woman is so beautiful he approves his mother...

WAR: Second Free Chapter

2 SEIZURE The war started in her mind first. Laika took count of the soldiers on board the warship. As a single female prisoner, she got only five escorts, one ship steerer and the captain who was so fat he could barely fit in the door to his cabin; she counted six in all, as she couldn’t regard the captain as hostile. She took stock of weapons at her disposal and for the first time, the clogging stench of the crocodile filled muddy water was her strongest ally. It was a stench so vile that one would regard the smell of a dead rat in a damp, stuffy house as potpourri. She noticed that the armed guard beside her started twitching his nose as the ship made its torturous way through the college of crocodiles and possibly decayed bodies thrown into the marsh for as long as Marshland existed; bodies that the crocodiles apparently refused to devour, so pieces of human body parts floated around stinking up the place. The stench was her distraction. Then she had to find a way...

Movie Review: God Calling...

BB Sasore, thank you for this movie. I have no idea if you experienced this movie or someone else did, but, I am convinced this movie couldn't have been someone's muse - this was real life experience! Ladies and gentlemen, if you haven't seen God Calling, you absolutely should. This movie has a star studded cast, amazing directing, apt graphics that just blow your mind and great acting that depicts reality to a zing. God Calling is about a family, man, wife and a daughter. They are happy, but wife doesn't like God or religion. It shows when she is forced to go to church by her little daughter and the pastor stops mid preaching to tell her 'God is calling you'. She scoffs it off and tells her husband that the pastor is looking for money. From thence, her life spirals out of control and brings her to a point she wants to kill herself... I cried and screamed during this movie, mostly because I've experienced something like it. Everyone needs to s...
